I recently produced a video interview where I discuss my wedding photography, style, approach and my packages. The idea was simply to answer the questions that I most frequently get asked and that most people would like to know. The video will hopefully give you a clear idea of how I operate on the day, what goes through my mind when I'm shooting and give you an idea of the kind of work I produce.

The Wedding Photographer Cheltenham- Image of the week 8

This weeks image is one that I felt I ought to include, as it is an image that I have had so much positive feedback from and is also a favourite image of mine.

The bride and groom were getting married in a little church in a gorgeous village just outside of Stoke-on-Trent. I often find myself shooting a good distance from home.

I am not exagerating when I say that if this shot had been taken 5 minutes either side of when it was, it wouldn't have worked. The day wasn't terrible for weather, but it had been an overcast morning and the afternoon pretty much followed suit. It was literally just as the bride and groom went to the end of the church for the blessing that the sun broke through for just long enough to capture a couple of frames. The balance of the sun illuminating both the couple and the stained glass window was just perfect. I would have to say it was that perfect combination of preparation and timing.

I can remember getting one of those great feelings about the image at the time that I took it and it has remained a favourite ever since.

Happy New Year From The Wedding Photographer Cheltenham

Well, here we are, another year is upon us.

 

2011 was a wonderful year for weddings. I have travelled all over shooting in some beautiful locations for some fantastic clients. I've had rain, sun, wind and everything in between. I think that the variety and never quite knowing what you're going to get on the day is part of what I enjoy most.

I had the great honour of shooting a very intimate wedding on Boxing day last year. It was so intimate that I was also asked if I would be willing to act as a witness. There was the Bride and Groom, their 3 children, the rigistrars and a key member of staff from the hotel, that was it. The day was lovely and it was actually one of my favourite weddings of the year.

I thought I'd share some information about the various wedding packages that I offer, as it's probably the most important decision to make once you have settled on a photographer. Below is a breakdown of all of my current wedding photography packages

A good starting place is to figure out if you would be wanting a digital package, allowing you to design and produce your own books, albums, prints etc.

If you would be wanting an album package, what size and how many images would you ideally want? This will help you to decide on the number of pages that you will need in order to display your images.

Do you want to have copyright permission, allowing you to print your own images etc?

You may only want a few hours coverage if your wedding is a very intimate affair, or you may require extensive coverage if it is a larger wedding. 

What style of imagery do you want for your wedding?

All of these questions help when you are making the choice of Wedding photography package. If in doubt, sit down over a tea or coffee with your shortlist of photographers and discuss your requirements.

One or two wedding photographers- that is the question

I get asked on a regular basis what my thoughts are with regards to having one or two photographers on your wedding day. It is a question that I have been asked by clients and other photographers alike, so, I thought I'd take the time to give you my thoughts on the subject.

There are many, many world class wedding photographers who always have and always will be the sole photographer if you were to commission them to cover your wedding. There are also many world class duo's who have always worked that way and again, will continue to do so. That being the case, is there a right or a wrong? The very simple answer is no. Different photographers have different working practices and ways of doing things. Styles vary considerably, from true documentary through to fashion style set ups on the day. The style you want will, to a certain degree, dictate wether you need one or two photographers on the day.

A good place to start would be to decide on the style of imagery that you would like your wedding to be recorded in. If you are going to have a lot of more time consuming, posed images at varying stages throughout the day, you may well want to have two photographers so that one can be capturing the other important aspects of the wedding. If you want to focus entirely on the day or are maybe a little more self conscious, then you may prefer to have a photographer who captures the day informally, in the background. In this case, one photographer will be perfectly suited to the task.

I have heard photographers ranting and raving that there should always be one photographer and that two are intrusive blah, blah blah. I have also heard photographers arguing the reverse, that there should be two and insinuating that one photographer couldn't possibly cover the day satisfactorily. I find both arguments to be flawed as both arrangements have their place. It is what is right for the bride and groom. 

Some weddings will require two photographers due to the nature and style of imagery that is required, others will require one, as it may be less staged and formal.

Decide on the style you like and you will be much clearer on what you will need on the day. Discuss your requirements with your photographer, find out if they fit your requirements and if you fit theirs. Do you prefer documentary images for your wedding or more lavish, magazine style images? How many  guests will be attending? How many locations are involved in the wedding day that need photographing and how far apart are they?

I hope that this goes some way to answering the question for you. Wedding photography, especially yours, is a very personal thing. One persons right is another persons wrong. Go with what works for you.

Image of the week 7

This weeks image is one that pretty much speaks for itself.

At the very end of the evening the father of the Bride had arrange for a gorgeous fireworks display, which was held on the lawn next to the lake in the grounds of the reception.

One of those images that captures the moment perfectly.

A beautiful ending to a beautiful day.
